2023 Winter Competition Draw; New Game Scoresheets; Best & Fairest Nominations each week

2023 Winter Draws: Grading is complete and the teams have now been allocated to grades to play in for the season. Competition Draws are available here: https://www.playhq.com/netball-australia/org/south-canberra-netball-association/8231a9c0 Please check carefully as new divisions have been created this year to make divisions more even.

New Game Scoresheets: Player positions, shooters attempts and goals & list fill-in players – (applicable for Juniors div 1, inters/ cadets and seniors).

Upfront, please note: SCNA has made it clear that whilst the new scoresheet process described below may initially seem overwhelming, please don’t be put off from being the scorer. The priority is to simply score the game. It is less imporant that the stats are recorded accurately – most importantly, please don’t let this new process limit your willingness to volunteer for this critical task!

This season SCNA will be using advanced score sheets (different from grading and different from score sheets used last year). Scorers with the assistance of coaches, will now be required to add player positions in the columns provided on the scoresheets, list any fill-ins and their positions played, and to track shooters attempts and goals.

We understand the new scoresheet may be daunting for some, however, but rest assured we don’t expect everything to be perfect, but a good attempt to be made. At the start of the game and during each quarter scorers should fill in the position of each player on the court. During each quarter the goals and attempts box for that quarter should be filled out. This means whenever a player attempts a shot and misses marking down a dot (•) in that player’s box. When they score successfully a line ( | ) should be recorded instead. An attempt at goal that is made but is brought back as the result of an obstruction or contact call, where the player may shoot again, does not need to be recorded as a missed attempt. As usual, when a goal is scored, the next number on the score tracker should be struck through. At the end of each game, the scores should be totalled, a winner recorded and both scorers should sign the score sheet.

Best & Fairest Nominations: In addition to the new scoring requirements, SCNA is also introducing a Best and Fairest award to be awarded in each division as voted by coaches (for juniors div 1, inters and cadets) and umpires (for seniors) with voting slips attached to the scoreboard.

For juniors div 1, inters and cadets both coaches will have the opportunity to vote for up to 2 players from the opposing team only. Two voting slips will be attached to the scoreboard and it is required that player names and game details are clearly written. These can be brought back to the office either with the scoreboard or delivered by the team coach. At the end of the season, these votes will be aggregated and the award presented to the winner from each division. Coaches are encouraged to interact and support one another in ensuring votes are placed each week.

For seniors, given many teams do not have coaches, we will be requiring umpires to cast B&F votes. One voting slip will be attached to the scoreboard and both umpires can collectively chose one player from each team to award votes to. If there is only one umpire, that umpire can chose two players, one from each team. Coaches or the captain of seniors teams should assist umpires in helping them identify the names of their selected players to receive votes – note this is also why it is important for player positions to be filled out.

Votes should be awarded to players who not only perform well on the court, but who are respectful and supportive of the umpires, their teammates and the opposition.

While the completion of the full score sheet and voting is not mandatory it is heavily encouraged. SCNA know this is a lot to ask of our parents, scorers, coaches and umpires, but we hope that we can use the information collected as a development tool for players and coaches, and for SCNA to use when it comes to representative team selections and trials. This ties in with SCNA’s commitment to be the best we can be and empower our players to do the same.

An additional instruction guide will be attached to all scoreboards this week.

We wish our Bullants Community a wonderful season full of fun, surrounded by good sportspeople on and off the court, skills that improve and hopefully some match success along the way. Remember any injuries are to be reported to the office for insurance purposes and of course, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Bullants Netball – Grading Round 3

Tomorrow is the last week of grading for our Junior, Intermediate, Cadet and Senior teams. There have been a number of changes, with teams moving divisions to test them at higher levels, so look closely at the table below for when your team is playing. The cool weather is here, so make sure to arrive 30 minutes before your first game for a good warm up!!!

Remember, if you want to keep warm then wear BLACK leg-ins and long-sleeve t-shirt under your dress or shorts/top.

A reminder to supporters…… you should stand on the opposite side of the court to the team bench. Only coaches and managers should be on the team bench. Obviously, if any of our youngest players need particular support you should feel free to help with that.

Let’s go Bullants!!!

New Grading Draw

Congratulations to the Bullants community for a great start to the season last Saturday. The rain mostly held off and there were many, many smiling faces happy to be back on court again or taking the court for the very first time.

SCNA has reviewed the results from Week 1 of Grading and below is the new draw for Week 2.

Supporters, please remember you should be positioned on the sideline opposite the team benches/coaches/scorer.

Game Times (Draw) for Grading, Uniforms, Managers, Umpiring & Coaching Courses

This Winter season is the club’s biggest yet. It has been a mammoth task for the committee to sort our 270 players into 29 teams and source coaches and umpires for them all! Whilst we are excited that the season commences next weekend, we still have teams without a Manager, who will not be taking the court unless someone steps forward to be the team Manager. Please let us know ASAP if you can be the Manager for any of the following teams:

   – Mingo (Year 4)
   – Comanche (Juniors)
   – Kiowa (Inters)
   – Mohawks (Inters)
   – Navajo (Inters)
   – Barona (Seniors)

Grading commences Saturday 29 April. Attached is the draw. Players should arrive 30min before their first game to warm up. Please meet your coach at the Bullants banner set up at the bottom gate near the Touch Football field.

Yr2/3/4 (SET and GO) do not have grading and their competition commences this week. Draws are available on PlayHQ https://www.playhq.com/netball-australia/org/south-canberra-netball-association/8231a9c0

Uniforms have arrived. Please come and collect at the pavilion at training on Wednesday.

Training and Game Day requirements: players need to come to training and game day with: jewellery and watches removed, long hair tied back, nails cut short, a drink bottle.

The Umpire’s course will cover the following

Pre-game responsibilitiesBasic techniques for umpires

Controlling the game

Each umpire will receive an umpires manual, Netball Australia Foundation Umpire Course, an SCNA Umpire shirt and a whistle.

Important information

Please remember NO DOGS are permitted at the courts.

Parking: King Street is the best place to park – the SCNA parking area is for SCNA officials only.

Wet weather game updates – we will put out a post if games are cancelled due to wet weather, but feel free to also follow the SCNA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/southcanberranetballassociation/ Bullants will also put a post out.

Respect. Please let our Umpires umpire, our Coaches coach and our Players play. Applaud good performance and efforts by all players. Congratulate both teams on their performance regardless of the game’s outcome. Remember Bullants and SCNA are run by volunteers. Our committees, coaches, managers and umpires give up their time and resources and deserve your support. Please familiarise yourself with the Netball Australia Code of Behaviour: https://act.netball.com.au/sites/act/files/2020-07/NetballAustraliaNationalCodesofBehaviour.pdf

We look forward to seeing everyone at Training again this Wednesday and also on court on Saturday. We wish every player a fun season as they develop their netball skills and we wish every team, coach, manager and supporters success throughout the season.

When does Bullants netball re-start?

Hi Bullants families

Wishing everyone a happy easter and school holidays. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we settled teams across all levels. This year we will have 29 teams taking the court – all teams have amazing coaches to help guide our players during the winter netball season.

Team Managers: We have a number of teams who are currently without team managers. Teams cannot play without a Manager. This is a simple, but necessary, role that enables all our coaches to focus their efforts on our players. Please email if you are able to take on the role for one of the following teams: Potawatomie, Menominee, Meskwaki, Yamasee, Mingo, Cherokee, Comanche, Hopi, Cheyenne, Kamia, Kiowa, Mohawks, Navajo, Braves, Arikara, Iroquis, Barona, Cree, Sekani.

Key dates

There will be no training during the school holidays with the next training session to be held on Wednesday, 26 April.  This will be our last training before Saturday netball begins on 29 April. Key dates for the season are outlined below.

Saturday, 29 AprilNet Set Go competition commences
Saturday, 29 AprilSCNA grading commences (first of three weeks)
Saturday, 20 MayCompetition (non-Net Set Go) commences
Saturday, 10 JuneCompetition concludes – winter break
Saturday, 22 JulyCompetition recommences
Saturday, 26 AugustCompetition concludes
Saturday, 2 September – Saturday, 16 SeptemberFinals for eligible teams (non-Net Set Go teams)

Saturday game timings will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Other things to note:

  • Uniforms which have been ordered are expected to arrive over the Easter break.  We will distribute the uniforms as soon as possible – hopefully first training back on 26 April.
  • Please do not park in the SCNA car park for pick up, drop off or during trainings or competition days. We have a number of officials and coaches who require easy access and we would not want to limit their ability to support our players.

Finally – what is in a name?

A lot of people ask about our unique team names – Potawatami, Iroquois and Kiowa to name a few. Well it turns out that many, many years ago importance was placed on the need for separate and easily identifiable names – with the decision made to name the teams after American Indian tribes. There are many generations of Bullants players who have played within teams with these names and come to love the history of moving up through the teams. The Bullants Committee understands that it is time to review the suitability of these names and we are currently considering options including culturally appropriate alternatives. We will keep our community updated as this work proceeds. In the meantime we hope that your family enjoys the great spirit that our players bring to the court.

Any questions or to nominate as Team Manager, please email bullantsnetball@gmail.com

Grading #3 and Welcome Yr2, 3 & 4

We hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend celebrating Canberra Day.

Wednesday 15th is Grading #3 and we welcome our year 2, 3 & 4 players on court.

Uniform shop will be open 5.20-6.30pm.

Please remember all jewellery removed, long hair tied back, nails cut short and bring a drink bottle.

Please make sure your jumper and water bottle has a name so we can return lost items.

Grading #2 – 8 March

We hope everyone enjoyed being back on the courts last week and a very warm welcome to our new club members.

For tomorrow and every Wednesday training and game day thereafter, please remember:

  • All jewellery removed, long hair tied back, nails cut short, bring a drink bottle
  • Dogs are not welcome at the courts. This is an ACT Government rule, not Bullants/SCNA rule
  • Best place to park is at the King Street entrance
  • Put your name in your jumper…. especially if you have a red Bullants jumper……they all look the same and it is difficult to reunite with the proper owner when there are 7 identical jumpers!

Uniform Shop – will be open again tomorrow 5.30-6.30pm

Congratulations to our Bullants players who represented SCNA at the first representative carnival last Sunday.
